- Karl Marx · 1818–1883→German philosopher, economist and revolutionary whose theory of historical materialism, class conflict and the critique of capitalism reshaped sociology and the modern social sciences.
- Max Weber · 1864–1920→German sociologist and political economist whose interpretive sociology, theory of rationalisation, and studies of religion, authority and bureaucracy made him a founder of the discipline.
