The second permanent tension is about zoom.

Every social event can be described at several scales, and the description you get depends entirely on the one you pick. Choose wrongly and you can be completely accurate and completely miss the point. This lesson is about learning to move the dial on purpose.

The idea, in plain words

A note about the word "level." It is a metaphor, and like all metaphors it can mislead if taken literally. There is no separate substance at the macro level; a labour market is not made of anything except people, jobs, and their relations. What "level" really names is a scale of description, chosen by the researcher, which brings some things into focus and pushes others out.

Who works at which scale

Micro traditions — symbolic interactionism (5.3), Goffman's dramaturgy and interaction order, ethnomethodology and conversation analysis (5.4), exchange theory (5.5), and interaction-focused conflict theory such as Randall Collins' interaction ritual chains (5.2). Typical method: close observation, ethnography, recorded talk, in-depth interviews (7.5).

Macro traditions — structural functionalism (5.1), Marxism (4.1, 5.6), Weberian comparative-historical sociology (4.3, 5.11), world-systems theory, Michael Mann's sources of social power, Tilly's state formation, Skocpol's revolutions (5.11). Typical method: official statistics, large surveys, historical archives, cross-national comparison (7.3, 7.6).

Meso traditions — organisational sociology, social network analysis (Granovetter, Burt), community studies, the sociology of professions, and Merton's middle-range theory — an explicit call to stop swinging between grand abstraction and raw data and instead build theories that explain a bounded domain well (5.1, 5.5).

Notice that the level you choose largely determines your method, which is why Part 7 will feel so different depending on which chapters you enjoy most. Notice, too, that this is a warning: it is dangerously easy to conclude that whatever your favourite method cannot see does not exist.

How the levels connect

This is the interesting part, and there are four good answers.

1. Aggregation — the macro is the sum

The simplest bridge: large patterns are what many individual actions add up to. A divorce rate is nothing but divorces; a market price is nothing but transactions. James Coleman (5.5) formalised this into a famous diagram, often called Coleman's boat: macro conditions shape individual situations, individuals act, and their actions combine back into macro outcomes. The programme of analytical sociology (Hedström, 5.5) is essentially to fill in these arrows with explicit mechanisms.

2. Emergence — the macro is more than the sum

But aggregation alone is not enough, and the traffic jam from 1.2.1 shows why. A jam has properties — a location, a speed, a direction of propagation that can move backwards while every car moves forwards — that no individual car possesses. Nobody chose it. It cannot be found by studying one driver very carefully.

Durkheim made this argument in the strongest possible terms: social facts are sui generis, of their own kind, and must be explained at their own level. His analogy was chemical — the properties of water are not the properties of hydrogen plus the properties of oxygen. Combine things and genuinely new properties appear.

This is why "just study individuals really thoroughly" cannot work as a strategy, no matter how good the individual-level data becomes.

3. Micro-foundations — the macro is enacted, over and over

The reverse direction. Where exactly is a labour market? Where is a caste system, or a state?

The answer that micro-sociologists give is bracing: it is in millions of encounters. A caste hierarchy exists in who is offered a chair, whose glass is washed separately, whose surname is asked and when, which marriages are refused, who is called by first name. A state exists in a clerk's decision, a soldier's obedience, a queue at a counter. Structures have no other place to live.

Randall Collins made this a serious theoretical programme: large structures are patterns of repeated interaction rituals, and they persist only as long as those rituals keep charging people with the emotional energy to perform them again. Erving Goffman's "interaction order" is the same insight from another angle.

This is not a denial of macro structure. It is a claim about its mode of existence — and it explains something the purely macro view cannot: why structures can change with startling speed when people simply stop performing them. In 1989, several apparently immovable states dissolved in weeks, essentially because enough people stopped behaving as though they were immovable.

4. Downward reach — the macro is inside the micro

And the final direction, which you already have from 1.1.3. Macro structures do not have to reach into a conversation from outside, because they are already in the participants — as habitus, as accent, as confidence, as the assumption about who may interrupt whom.

Return to the interview. The "ah" at the mention of a college was the entire education system, compressed into one syllable. The candidate's decision to speak faster after the phone glance was a labour market in which two hundred people want this job, expressing itself as a change in speech rate. The macro was in the room the whole time. It was wearing a body.

Two fallacies to name and avoid

Level confusions produce two classic errors, and knowing their names will make you a better reader immediately.

The ecological fallacy — inferring something about individuals from data about groups. Districts with more of some group have higher rates of some outcome; therefore members of that group are more likely to have that outcome. This does not follow, and it has produced a great deal of damaging pseudo-knowledge. Aggregate correlations can even run in the opposite direction to individual ones.

The individualistic (or atomistic) fallacy — the mirror image: inferring group-level patterns from individual data. Every person I interviewed said hard work matters most; therefore mobility in this society is driven by hard work. Also does not follow. What people believe about a system is not a measurement of the system.

Both are covered again in 7.2, where they matter for research design. Learn them now, because you will see them in newspapers this week.

Reification: the macro's occupational hazard

The special danger of working at large scales is reification — treating an abstraction as if it were a thing that acts. "Society demands." "The market decided." "Capitalism wants." These are convenient shorthands and they are also traps, because they smuggle in an actor where there is none, and thereby hide the actual people, decisions and mechanisms doing the work.

The discipline's own founders were not immune. Whenever you read a sentence in which a large noun has a verb, try rewriting it with people in it and see whether the claim survives. Often it becomes sharper. Sometimes it evaporates.

The opposite hazard: micro myopia

Micro work has its own failure mode: exquisite description of an encounter with no account of why this encounter, between these people, on these terms. A perfect transcript of a conversation between a landlord and a tenant, with no mention of who owns the building, is a strange document.

The standard critique of symbolic interactionism (5.3) is exactly this — that it is superb on meaning and weak on power. It is a fair criticism, and the best interactionists took it seriously.

Why the meso deserves more of your attention than it gets

Textbooks usually present the tension as micro versus macro and leave the middle empty. Resist this, because most of your actual life happens in the middle: a workplace, a school, a caste association, a union, a congregation, a housing society, a WhatsApp group, a profession.

The meso level is also where the most tractable research often lives. Granovetter's finding that people find jobs through weak ties — acquaintances rather than close friends — is a meso finding, and it explained something neither a psychological study of job-seekers nor a national employment statistic could (5.5). Organisational studies explain why two hospitals with identical funding produce different mortality. Network analysis explains how a rumour, a technology or a disease actually travels.

If you ever find yourself stuck between a personal story and a national abstraction, drop into the meso. That is usually where the mechanism is.

Zooming as a skill

The mature position is not to pick a level but to become fluent at moving between them, checking each claim against the others.

A useful discipline: whenever you make a claim at one level, ask the two neighbouring questions.

  • Made a macro claim? Ask: what does this look like in a single room, on a single afternoon? If you cannot answer, you may not have a mechanism.
  • Made a micro claim? Ask: if this happened ten million times, what would the distribution look like — and does the available data agree? If not, either your case is unusual or your interpretation is off.

That habit alone will improve your thinking more than memorising any theory in this course.

Why it matters

Level fluency is, in practice, the most useful analytical skill in the discipline.

It makes you a better reader. When a study claims something, the first question is now automatic: at what level was this measured, and at what level is the conclusion being drawn? A depressing share of published confusion lives in that gap.

It makes you a better explainer. "Poverty causes crime" is a macro correlation, not an explanation. The explanation lies in the mechanism — the meso and micro pathways through which a distribution becomes an act in a particular street on a particular night. Merton's middle-range theory was invented for exactly this.

And it protects you from both political vices. Pure micro thinking produces a politics of etiquette: be kinder, be less prejudiced, and the arrangement will follow. Pure macro thinking produces a politics of abstraction in which nothing anyone does today could possibly matter. Holding both levels lets you see how a system is kept alive by daily actions — which is also how it can be starved.
